Speakers Information

Talking points for agency speakers . . .

  • Introduce yourself:  what agency you’re with and what your function/title is at the agency
  • Briefly explain how your agency helps the community (services, etc.)
  • Briefly provide details on your programs that are funded by the United Way (list attached)
  • Share a personal story of someone helped by your programs/services
  • Tell the audience how United Way helps your agency, what it means to your programs, and where your agency would be without the United Way
  • Do not solicit designations for your agency or discuss your special/fundraising events
  • Your presentation should not be more than 5 minutes in length
  • If you’re asked directly by a company to make a presentation as part of their United Way campaign, please contact Billie White at 674-5181, ext. 240 so we can arrange for United Way presentation at the speaking engagement.

2008 Campaign Talking Points

 

United Way 101:

 

§         The 112 funded programs at the Heart of Illinois United Way’s (HOIUW) 45 partner agencies deliver services and assistance to more than 1,100 people everyday in our community.

 

§         More than 40 percent of those helped are under the age of 18.

 

§         The HOIUW service area is Peoria, Tazewell, Woodford, Marshall, Putnam and Stark counties. (There are other smaller United Way’s in this area – the largest of which is the Pekin United Way.)

 

§         Our United Way works efficiently – 90.3 cents of every dollar goes directly back to our community.

 

§         Last year the HOIUW raised $9.231 million in the annual campaign.  Money raised stays in our community.

 

§         The Caterpillar Inc.- CEFCU – Methodist Medical Center of Illinois Challenge Grant offers a total of $250,000 that can be used as a dollar-for-dollar match for any new or increased giving.

The Heart of Illinois United Way focuses funding on:

 

§    Youth programs include mentoring, tutoring, childcare, camp, after school educational/recreational activities, social development, counseling and more.

§         In central Illinois, 40 percent of children entering kindergarten are behind in their developmental goals and are not ready to succeed in school. Heart of Illinois United Way provides 2,740 pre-school children with a new book every month while encouraging parental involvement critical to improving a child's reading skills.

§         More than 1 in 100 adults in the United States are in prison. At just one local United Way funded program, more than 95 percent of youth involved in their after school programs will not be associated with crime. Heart of Illinois United Way funds many after-school programs and summer camps that build self-esteem and encourage youth to make good choices.

 

§    Family programs include counseling, disaster services, emergency shelter and related services, respite care, parenting skills, recreation, outreach services, educational programming and more.

§         Each year hundreds of people in central Illinois are affected by house fires, floods, tornadoes and other disasters. Heart of Illinois United Way funded programs provide more than 4,000 nights of emergency shelter that include food, clothing and mental health services.

§         Every fifteen seconds in the United States a woman is beaten.  Last year there were 114,921 reported cases of domestic violence in Illinois. Heart of Illinois United Way funds programs providing shelter, counseling, and legal advocacy to victims and their children.

 

§    Self-reliance programs include employment services, counseling, life skills, food pantries, home delivered meals, emergency assistance, special transportation, transitional housing and more.

§         The cost of basic food items has increased by approximately 20 percent in one year. Food stamp usage in central Illinois is at an all time high.  Hearts of Illinois United Way funded programs provide more than 160,000 meals to local residents.

§         On any given day there are 315 homeless people in the Peoria area.  The average age of a homeless person is nine. Heart of Illinois United Way funded programs include job counseling, substance abuse, mental health and daycare that help families and individuals become self-reliant.

 

§    Health programs include health and safety services, community clinics, exercise/therapy, emergency response, home health care, substance abuse prevention and treatment, dental services, visual services and more.

§         Every 71 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. More than 70 percent of people with Alzheimer’s are cared for at home. Heart of Illinois United Way funded programs provide awareness, education and support for families and individuals coping with Alzheimer’s.

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States. Twenty four percent of adults in central Illinois suffer from doctor-diagnosed arthritis. Heart of Illinois United Way funds programs providing education, awareness, and clinical support for people with arthritis.
